Dr. B’s Magic Mocktail

As I age it becomes harder and harder to recover from the activities of a normal day; it just seems like my body sort of aches generally everywhere now. Combine parenting, work, the endless to-do list, getting kids to activities, and a day peppered with varying dosages of stress, it seems obvious why we can start to run low in the energy department - we are using up our resources too quickly! Nutritionally it can be hard to keep up. Meal prepping or putting aside consistent times to cook a perfectly macro-balanced meal isn’t always an option. But then again, I really don’t like aching or being chronically exhausted so something had to give!

I’ve learned that trying to do it all or be it all just adds to the stress. So instead I pick 1-3 things per day I can do with consistency that are good for my health [and repeat the mantra “I do my best and forget the rest”]. I try to curate alone time, energy, and movement into my daily routine. I like being able to get 30-45 minutes in with resistance training at least 3 days a week (which also gives me alone time), and a form of stress-relieving, gentle movement like yoga or walking my dog through the woods the other 4 days a week. But the biggest blockade I seem to hit is energy - sometimes my body just feels completely drained of energy. This is a really common symptom of hormonal shifts or chronic stress, basically anything that requires you to be in a constant state of “monitoring and/or repairing”. So ever since I’ve hit cougar puberty (aka perimenopause), it’s been requiring a lot of my attention. Thanks to the brilliant mind of Suzanne Berry, GAIN™-RHNP who said “the energy of the body is dictated by the energy of the systems (respiratory system, digestive system, nervous system, etc.) and the energy of the systems are dictated by the energy production of the cells and the energy production of the cells are limited by the health of the cellular membranes”, I decided to shift my focus from hormones to improving cellular health.

Improving cellular health takes consistency and time. One of the first things I decided to change was alcohol consumption. Having a glass of wine before bed needed to go. But when I assessed why that habit felt so good to me it really came down to one thing - stress. I really thought it was helping me to unwind and destress. Once I understood the motivation behind the habit, it was much easier to come up with a plan and from that Dr. B’s magic mocktail was born. A ton of ingredients for cellular health combined with magnesium for creating a sense of calm at the end of the day. The ultimate stress busting beverage without the harms of alcohol. The ingredients last a long time and all in all costs about $3-5/glass depending on if you’re using a soda stream or bottled sparkling water.

I don’t have an association or affiliation with these products, I just happen to feel they are great quality, easily digested, and reasonably priced compared to alternative products - that being said if you have a favorite magnesium product or electrolyte product you can always replace it! I do have a Fullscript account which I use to get discounts off the MSRP of these products which I’m happy to extend to any of my patients.

Try it, let me know what you think. I notice a huge difference in my generalized muscle aches and pains and my body’s ability to recover from both physical or emotional stress.
